The likatic tribal members can identify very much with the ideas and visions of "bioregionalism".
They see this as a political structural model that can effectively stop the destruction of nature and
the earth. The Likatier tribe sees itself as part of this worldwide movement that rejects the arbitrary
division of the world and instead wants to introduce so-called "bioregions".
What is bioregionalism?
Bioregionalism emerged in the early 1970s, when some people gathered in San Francisco
and imagined a better world. The idea of the bioregion arose, which in their understanding should be
a natural region of life - a geographical area whose flowing borders are determined solely by
nature. The Bioregion has a characteristic flora and fauna and is often limited by watersheds. It is
also determined by certain ecological laws to which man must submit in order to ensure sustainable
development and thus the well-being of future generations.

According to this understanding, bioregions are protected by a spirit of the country that inspires
them and manifests itself in certain places of power. Bioregionalism is based on a life in harmony with the
earth, which takes place in home regions, in manageable life contexts, with an economy based on renewable
energies, without polluting the environment, produces healthy food and strives for self-sufficiency.
Bioregional consciousness recognizes the spiritual inspiration of nature and strives for a
harmonious coexistence of all beings. The American bioregionalists then set to work and created a map of their
bioregions. It turned out that these were almost identical with the Indian tribal borders before the arrival of
Columbus.
Longings of Bioregionalism
The followers of bioregionalism address longings that our society hardly fulfils any more. Longing
for security, for home, for a familiar habitat with mountains, valleys and rivers, with people with whom one
maintains intensive social relations. Bioregionalists have recognized that today there is a great need for
manageable communities that are rooted in nature and the home region. The logical consequence of bioregionalism
is life in tribes.
Successes of Bioregionalism
Bioregionalism integrates the knowledge of the Indians, the ecological wisdom of Taoism, Buddhism,
Christian mystics and European philosophers. In the foreground is above all the belief in the soulfulness of
nature, the so-called "animism". Here nature spirits have their place as well as solar energy, alternative
medicine, environmental protection activities, programs for green cities, which again let the spirit of Mother
Earth flow in their veins, as well as the idea of living in communities and above all in tribes.
In 1992, bioregionalism became the official guideline of the State of California. There are now more
than 250 groups active in North America, but the movement now also has many supporters in Europe, Australia, and
even in sub-Saharan Africa. Especially in Africa, models are currently being discussed to end the ecological
disaster there and the tribal wars caused by colonial state borders. There are also a number of bioregional
groups in Germany that are seriously concerned with the new movement.
