HOPI is the name of the oldest indigenous tribe of the turtle island (= original name of the North and South American continent.) The name HOPI means "peace" or "peaceful". According to myths, it was given to them by the "great spirit" long before (see myths) . This is not just a tribal name, but an attitude to life: gentle, peaceful and humble to all the things and circumstances that life and destiny has in store for everyone. The Hopi are one of the few tribes on this planet that have never waged war. As a people of peace, for example, they long endured American rule with restraint and humility, although they always regarded themselves as an independent and sovereign nation. Their rebellion against the oppression and destruction of their people now consists above all in the worldwide spread of their message of peace and in passive resistance.
